The X can be replaced by another letter to indicate the body type, and an “e” suffix indicates an electric version of an existing model. For example the L38e is the electric saloon version of the X38 Fluence. Models are frequently updated or facelifted part way through their life, and given the name Phase 2, (or ph2), then Phase 3, etc. The latest models tend to use letters rather than numbers, for example the fifth-generation Clio is the XJA.
- [BMW](https://hevra.org.uk/members-area/bmw/): Models are identified by a code beginning E, F or G, for example F30 is the saloon version of the sixth generation 3-series. Models under the BMWi sub-brand use an I instead, which can create some confusion, for example the i3 model code is i01. Older Mini models used an R instead (leftover from the Rover days), although later ones use the same format as BMW.
